Keep the Spirit Home

The Friends of Govedare invite you to help us keep David Govedare’s lead stallion in Chewelah City Park, where it belongs— where the legacy began.

This is more than a sculpture. It’s a symbol of Chewelah’s legacy, identity, and the creative spirit. Celebrate the art, the story, and the hands that shaped it— a powerful reminder of Chewelah’s creative spirit..

A Story Forged in Steel

In the heart of Chewelah the Lead Stallion rears into the sunset. The Lead Stallion faces the home and studio where David Govedare brought it to life— a striking landmark that ties his monumental work to the place it was made.

The emotional sculpture is the a seminal representation of the David Govedare’s story. The original prototype for his conic Grandfather Cuts Loose the Ponies in Vantage, Washington. From a Chewelah studio to the cliffs of the Columbia, David Govedare’s vision galloped into legend.

The herd runs wild on the cliffs above Vantage, but the Lead Stallion stands just yards from Highway 395. Right here in the heart of Chewelah.

No hike, no detour—just a quick stop to witness history, a moment of magic, just off the pavement. Take a scenic drive north from Spokane on 395—just under an hour to Chewelah, where the Stallion waits.

Govedare

“The sculpture is about the wild, free spirit of the horse, a gift which man has been given and is losing. The basket is meant to be the Earth Mother, tossing the horses to the four directions... A gift to the people.”
